Provost Coker returns to teaching, Davis named interim.

Assuming the role of interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs will be Dr. Vicki Davis.Davis, who serves as associate vice president in the Office of Academic Affairs, has worked at A&M-Commerce since 1967.Dr. Don Coker has had an exemplary career at Texas A&M University-Commerce first as a professor and then head of the department of elementary education.He later served approximately five years as dean of the College of Education before becoming Provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, A&M-Commerce President Keith McFarland said.As provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, Dr. Coker has done an excellent job.We owe him a great deal, McFarland commented at the Fall Faculty Meeting on Aug.24.

Davis has a great deal of experience as a faculty member, a department head, and as associate vice president of Academic Affairs.She will fit in and run that academic affairs office very well, McFarland said.

Dr. Davis is a capable and energetic administrator who has an unequaled knowledge of this university and has a demonstrated ability to provide leadership and vision within the division of academic and student affairs..Regarding her appointment, Davis said, There are many challenges in the role of interim provost.However, there are many comforts in knowing the level of expertise, energy and commitment evident in the university and surrounding community..Davis said she is looking forward to continuing to work with students, faculty, administration, staff, and the university's other partners in fulfilling the mission of the university.I appreciate the standards set by Dr. Coker and the many contributions he has made especially as we have integrated the functions of academic and student affairs, she commented.A national search will be conducted to fill the provost's position at A&M-Commerce.Davis' first appointment at A&M-Commerce was as instructor of home economics.She was promoted to assistant professor in 1973, associate professor in 78, and department head in the 1980s.With the phasing out of the home economics department in the 1980s, she became an associate professor in the department of counseling.Davis also worked as director of the Freshman Success Seminar from 1990 to 92.Davis has won several awards including the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Texas Association of College Teachers in 79 and was a child development specialist for the Governor's Advisory Council on Early Childhood Education from 1974-'77.She is a member of several international and national organizations.These memberships include the Texas Council on Family Relations, Texas Home Economics Association, Leadership Committee and area coordinator Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Texas.Davis earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas A&M University-Commerce and her doctorate from Texas Woman's University.
