April 23, 2001, Boston, MA - In a letter sent to Mayor Menino today, mayoral candidate Peggy Davis-Mullen proposes to debate six times during the course of the campaign.Media outlets, community groups, citizen action organizations, and other interested hosts should contact her campaign office at 617-325-VOTE.

"I ask Mayor Menino to join me in six debates focused on six separate issues facing the lives of Boston residents," stated Davis-Mullen."I believe that public debate is the cornerstone of our democratic process. Our city has lacked a public dialogue on issues for over 8 years. This will change with my campaign."

As proposed by Davis-Mullen, the debates will be held once a month from June until November and each last approximately an hour. Each debate will focus on one issue with each campaign choosing 3 separate issues.Davis-Mullen proposes to debate on the issues of education, affordable housing, and development. The letter to the Mayor also states that the Davis-Mullen campaign will work with his schedule regarding potential times and dates.

"I understand that we both have challenging schedules," stated Davis-Mullen."I am hopeful that the Mayor will agree to debate me in the coming months.I am sure he will agree with me when I say that the people deserve to hear how decision-makers and candidates for public office feel about the issues that impact their daily lives."

Davis-Mullen announced her candidacy for Mayor of Boston this past week to a packed crowd at the Fogg Post American Legion hall in Hyde Park.In her fourth term as a Boston City Councilor-At-Large, Davis-Mullen is currently Chair of the Ways and Means Committee.Born in 1959 to a single working mother in South Boston, Davis-Mullen attended Boston Public Schools and later Newman Prep, graduating at the age of 16.
    ...
In 1987, Davis-Mullen was elected to the Boston School Committee.During her tenure, she served as chair of the Dropout/At Risk committee and as Vice President. She is currently enrolled in the M.P.A. program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

When I learned earlier this summer that Peggy Davis-Mullen's HomeRun Mortgage was being investigated for possible fraud, I expected a drawn-out public battle. After all, Davis-Mullen is a former City Councilor and 2001 mayoral candidate, and allegations of mortgage fraud suggest a serious abuse of public trust.

    Davis-Mullen to announce she's running
    ...
City Councilor At-Large and South Boston native Peggy Davis-Mullen is expected to announce by the end of the week she'll run for mayor.

Speculation that Davis-Mullen would challenge incumbent Mayor Thomas Menino for the post has been mounting for weeks and now sources say the councilor will offer the popular a challenge in the fall.
    ...
"This isn't just an idea I'm floating around, I'm very serious," said Davis-Mullen."I think people will know what I'm doing very soon."

In January, South Boston Online reported that both Davis-Mullen and City Councilor At-Large Francis "Mickey" Roache were considering a run.But Roache dropped the idea a few weeks ago - leaving Davis-Mullen as the one to actually throw her hat in the ring.

Private polls held by Roache, another South Boston native, came back showing overwhelming support for the mayor - persuading the former police chief not to run for mayor.

"His decision has no bearing on mine - I think the world of Mickey and no one can say a bad thing about him," she said.

Davis-Mullen's expected announcement comes on the heels of a poll in a daily newspaper that shows the councilor would get beat handily by the incumbent Menino by more than 40 percent.
    ...
Davis-Mullen, a West Roxbury resident, added that there is a general misunderstanding by Menino of what's best for individual communities.
    ...
Davis-Mullen was first elected to the city council in 1993.She was recently named the chair of the powerful ways and means committee by newly elected city council president Charles Yancey. She also chairs the arts and humanities committee while serving as the vice-chair on the oversight and tourism committees.

They will mark a political triumph as well for Mayor Tom Menino's nemesis City Councilor Peggy Davis-Mullen.
    ...
The idea was conceived at a City Hall reception in March 1996 when Davis-Mullen first met Steven Maler of the American Repertory Theater and Joan Moynagh, executive director of ARTS/Boston.
    ...
After the three had a follow-up lunch, Davis-Mullen attended a production of ``A Midsummer Night's Dream'' that Maler was directing.
    ...
Davis-Mullen persuaded Maler to allow ``A Midsummer Night's Dream'' to become the company's first production.
    ...
``I went through my Rolodex,'' says Davis-Mullen, ``calling everyone I could think of.''
    ...
Davis-Mullen, Maler and Moynagh are still the mainstays behind the effort.
    ...
Behind it all has been Davis-Mullen.
    ...
But it is Davis-Mullen who personally raises the money and pushes each year's performances forward.

There's an important subtext to this story, however. Not surprisingly, it's political.

Davis-Mullen is to politics what a lightening rod is to thunderstorms. She provokes strong reaction, pro and con. This is the woman, after all, who received a week's worth of press scrutiny just because she moved to West Roxbury.
    ...
That contentious relationship meant that Davis-Mullen had little help in getting her project off the ground. Potential donors, wary of angering the mayor, were hesitant. The city contributed no money; even now it kicks in only $6,000 and some in-kind assistance such as Port-A-Potties.

Later on, as the company's popularity with critics and the public grew, there were ugly whispers that the troup would have an easier time if it got rid of Davis-Mullen.

In truth, if Davis-Mullen hadn't been involved, there would be no Shakespeare on the Common.

Davis-Mullen, citing the plays' diverse audiences, says she sees the performances as a way to bring high-caliber culture to all, particularly to working class residents who have in the past been put off theater by high prices or stereotypes about blue hair.

Her critics - and they are legion - figure that the company is simply a political ploy, part of a master strategy to win Davis-Mullen higher political office.
    ...
In particular, as Davis-Mullen would doubtless argue, they are not bad traits to have in a mayor.
