Holly Davis-Carter, head of Releve Entertainment, the Hollywood-based company representing Mary Mary, knew that the promoter had canceled the show but was surprised to learn about the problems with refunds.
She is working with the Rev. Ovester Armstrong of Rockford on the possibility of rebooking Mary Mary later this year.
Armstrong solicited a local sponsor to promote the show, which was supposed to benefit his Key Enterprise, an organization which sends Rockford students on tours of black colleges.
He estimates that 1,500 of the $22 and $32 tickets were sold for a venue with a capacity of 3,000.He did not find out about the cancellation until the night before the show was supposed to happen, and now Velvet Rope Productions isn't returning his calls, he said.
Armstrong has filed a report of fraud with the Rockford Police Department and a complaint with the Attorney General's office.
He wasn't taken for any money, but he feels scammed, too.Not only was he left alone on concert night to deal with disappointed and angry ticketholders from as far away as Chicago, but people have accused him of pocketing the money himself.
"I'm every bit a victim as everyone else," he said.
