"The Greek students are concerned since they are using a Greek name," said John Davenport, coordinator of Greek life at SIUE."They're really concerned that if something happens, that that group is going to be associated with Greek life at SIUE."

All SIUE fraternities and sororities must follow university guidelines that restrict underage drinking and hazing, but support academic standards and other issues that represent the school, according to John Davenport, coordinator of Greek life at SIUE.

However, Alpha Sigma Sigma is not forced to the same standards because the university doesn't recognize it.

Davenport said he is concerned "because the majority of people are not going to understand the difference between the groups."

John Davenport, coordinator of SIUE's Kimmel Leadership Center and an organizer of the event, said the car show is open to the public both to attend and enter.

"The is the first time we have had a car show," Davenport said.

The entry fee for cars is $10 for the judge class and $15 for the display class.Registration will be conducted between 8 a.m. to noon.

Davenport said there will also be entertainment during the car show.

"We will have music by Sh-Boom and there will be lots of activities for kids," he said."We've talked about doing it for a few years.It coincides with this year's theme 'Get Your Kicks on Route 66.'"

Davenport said if the car show is successful it might become a staple of homecoming week.

"Hopefully it will be an annual event," Davenport said.

The car show is being sponsored by the SIUE Homecoming Committee.

"We try to be as proactive as possible in giving the students resources, and we educate them to make responsible choices,"Davenport said.

"The reality is, I don't know how many straight males are all that progressive here at that age," he said.

Part of the fraternity's recruitment problems may stem from SIUE being a commuter campus, one with a relatively small Greek community, Davenport said.

"I know it isn't exclusive to gay or bisexual men, it's open to what they call progressive men, but the reality is, I don't know how many straight males are all that progressive here at that age," he said.
