Jim Davenport of Coos Bay grew up on the beaches of Western Oregon. His brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather were all commercial fishermen.

His love for the sea is reflected in his art.In high school he excelled in drawing and painting, and it was apparent to his teacher that Davenport should become an artist.Although his life went into other directions for a while, at age 40 he decided to devote his life to the arts.

Now, at 59, Davenport is still a member of Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 51 of Coos Bay, and many of his paintings depict ocean scenes with Coast Guard vessels and their men in action. Also famous are his oil paintings of lighthouses along the Oregon Coast, and his renderings of the local wildlife.

Davenport is a member of the American Society of Marine Artist, a founding member of the Bay Area Artists Association, and vice president of the Coos Art Museum where he heads the Art and Education Program.

"Teaching the kids in their school or in the classroom of the art museum is great fun and very rewarding to me," Davenport said.
