They often will build bridges too by saying things like, "Yes, I know the first time I heard it I didn't get it either so I thought about it this way ... [or] I asked this question ... [or] remember how Mrs. Davenport suggested we ..." Because the student who is doing the coaching was in the class when the material was presented, it allows him or her to refer back to experiences they both had.

Jerri Davenport from Principia Academy decided to have her sophomores teach the grammar unit.She challenged them with a detailed rubric for a teaching process based on Terry's way of working with student teachers--PLAN, ORGANIZE, LEAD, ASSESS, REFLECT (POLAR).Helpful handouts included: a pre-teaching survey, a post-teaching questionnaire, a rating scale with descriptions of five levels of ability--minimum to excellent--within each POLAR part.Explanations of her video clips included descriptions of the students' growth during the weeks they prepared and taught the whole class.
