"As far as we can tell, this is the most complete line service training package available on the market today," says Alan Darrow, Vice President with NATA."Clearly for what it is, it is very reasonably priced."While ATI formerly charged $3,000 for its training package, NATA is offering the Safety 1st program to its members for a mere $100 per line service person.Non-members can buy the program for $200 per line service person. That relatively small investment buys a rather substantial stake in the peace of mind and other benefits that come with well-trained employees."

"Where the NATA Safety 1st program differs from existing programs - most of which are provided by the oil companies - is that we have modules that deal with towing, safety, customer service, as well as fire training," Darrow says."Most of the other packages do not offer all of these components. The oil companies are rightly concerned about fuel handling and fuel quality . . . In reality, the line service person has to do more than just pump fuel into an aircraft, so we've addressed those other responsibilities that are also very important to the day-to-day operations of the business."

According to Darrow, all of the insurance companies NATA has worked with are very supportive of the effort.
"We have asked the insurance industry to help us make NATA's Safety 1st program for line service technicians the equivalent to what full motion simulator training has become for pilots," Darrow says."We know that some insurance companies are now asking FBOs when it's time for renewal if they participate in NATA Safety 1st."
AIG Aviation, Inc. is one of several insurance agencies that have voiced support.

Darrow says that corporate flight departments also should consider participating in NATA's Safety 1st program. In the past, it was common for only larger aviation businesses to invest in training programs, due in part to the expense of those programs.
You don't have to be a big member. We've tried to price it in such a way that it doesn't preclude the smaller operators from being able to take advantage of it too." With so many positives associated with NATA's expanded Safety 1st program, participation is likely to increase substantially in the coming months. For at least some of NATA's members, the decision is quite simple.
