Millersville, Pa., University Senior Heads Student Leaders Board Oct 29, 2002 (Lancaster New Era - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News via COMTEX) -- Brandon W. Danz is a student on the go.
He's a senior who is president of the Millersville University Student Senate, and he has other positions on campus as well.
Also, he's a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education's Board of Governors, which is the governing body for the 14 state-owned universities.
Now, he has another achievement. Danz has been elected chairman of the Pennsylvania State System of High Education's Board of Student Government Presidents.
"I'm really excited about it," he said. "It gives me the opportunity to work with other student body presidents. I want to improve communications. We all have the same problems. We can take what works and use it wisely."
Danz, who assumed the chairman's job this month, said the group will focus on four issues: diversity, academic advisement, campus pride and town-gown relations.
At a time when most university students come and go, Danz gets involved.
He has always been interested in politics and government. As he puts it, "I just want to make a difference. Once I jump into something I don't turn back. I have the charisma and ability to represent the students at Millersville. Why not use that?"
It's a big step up from serving as Student Senate president to being on the statewide board that oversees the budget and regulations of the universities. But, Danz is up to the challenge.
"It's an awesome and exciting experience," he said. "I feel the board treats me not as a student but as another board member.
On the higher education board, Danz believes he is representing all students, not just MU students. "I love standing up for students," he said.
Danz, 23, who lives in Washington Boro, is a 1998 graduate of Lampeter-Strasburg High School. At MU, he's majoring in secondary education/social studies with a minor in athletic coaching. He's likely to go into teaching.
He is the son Bill Danz and Roseanne Daecher.
The Board of Student Government Presidents comprises the 14 state-owned universities' student government organizations. The student government presidents, along with the other elected student government officers from each of the campuses, meet four times a year to discuss issues important to the more than 100,000 students who attend State System universities.
In recent years, they have addressed such issues as campus security and safety, civility and alcohol abuse and binge drinking.
