Joseph Periam "Perry" Danton, UC Berkeley professor emeritus and former dean of the School of Librarianship, passed away last week after a short illness. He was 94.
Danton died Nov. 12 at Summit Medical Center in Oakland.
As dean, Danton created a doctoral program in library science and increased the size of the school's faculty.
Danton retired in 1976 after 30 years at UC Berkeley.
"He continued to write and publish into his 90s," said his son Joseph Periam Danton Jr. "He still was driving to his office in South Hall in his white convertible sports car at the age of 90."
Danton was born in Palo Alto, Calif. He attended four universities, obtaining a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
During World War II, Danton served in the U.S. Navy and earned the rank of lieutenant commander.
Danton moved to UC Berkeley and was appointed dean of the School of Librarianship in 1946. He remained dean until 1961.
He served as a visiting lecturer at numerous U.S. and international universities, including the University of Chicago, Columbia University and Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Danton was a Fulbright Research Scholar in Germany from 1960-61 and in Austria from 1964-65.
In addition to receiving many grants and fellowships, Danton received the Berkeley Citation in 1976-one of UC Berkeley's most prestigious honors.
