"It was important for us to take our time and really look at where we were headed as an institution before we made any major changes," says Darrick Dansby, ACC's board president since the fall of 2005.
    ...
They committed to finding new sources of funding, broadening the programming, restructuring the organization internally, and bringing people onto the board who Dansby says would be "doers as well as talkers."Key to putting the plan into action would be a dynamic leader who could energize the institution and raise its profile.Dansby rolled out the ACC's new objectives at the Martin Luther King Day breakfast at Music Hall in February 2006.Wesson was sitting in the audience that day and approached Dansby after the breakfast.

"He was very excited and had some terrific ideas," Dansby says, "but we knew we couldn't just hire him outright because we wanted to talk to a number of individuals."

Darrick Dansby is leaving the Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. to become executive director of the controversial CityLink social services development in the West End.

Dansby, 36, has been 3CDC's director of development for Over-the-Rhine for the past two years. In that role, he helped oversee the corporate-backed nonprofit's redevelopment efforts in the historic neighborhood.3CDC has invested roughly $70 million in Over-the-Rhine, and by this time next year expects to have 213 condominiums completed as well as more than 35,000 square feet of retail space.

"I never would have imagined that we would have been able to accomplish what we've accomplished in such a short amount of time," said Dansby, whose last day at 3CDC is Friday."We have really just been working as hard as we can to redevelop the neighborhood."

Even with all that success, however, Dansby said he was drawn to the CityLink job, which he will start Sept. 2.

"CityLink is an exciting project that can make a huge and tremendous impact on Greater Cincinnati, and to have the opportunity to help lead the organization and start it from the ground up was just a calling I had to answer," he said.

CityLink board Chairman Tim Senff said Dansby was a "perfect candidate" to become CityLink's first executive director because he had all four characteristics that the board was seeking: the ability to recruit and integrate social service partners; the ability to support and lead a building project and lead a capital campaign to fund it; the ability to engage the community; and the leadership qualities to build the organization.

CityLink has purchased a building at 800 Bank St. in the West End, but Senff estimates it will cost between $12 million and $15 million to make the improvements needed for the project.

Before joining 3CDC, Dansby served as president of Smart Money Community Services, where he expanded the organization and led a capital campaign.Prior to that, he worked at United Way of Greater Cincinnati helping to recruit and train volunteers. All that experience makes Dansby the perfect candidate to lead CityLink, Senff said.
    ...
Founding churches include Crossroads in Oakley, where Senff is an associate pastor, and Christ Emmanuel Christian Fellowship in Walnut Hills, where Dansby is a member.
    ...
Dansby said he's not worried about the controversy surrounding the project.

"I've dealt with controversy before," said Dansby, who faced considerable skepticism about 3CDC's plans in Over-the-Rhine when he started his job there.

Darrick Dansby is meeting with Over-the-Rhine residents and hopes they will share 3CDC
    ...
Now it's Darrick Dansby's job to explain what the agency has been doing -- and why it's good for the neighborhood -- to residents who have had reservations about 3CDC from the start.

It won't be easy. But those who know Dansby say he's got the right credentials for the job.
    ...
"On the other hand, we are much encouraged by Mr. Dansby taking that position, if for no other reason that he does have so much time invested in getting to know the community and community leaders over the years."

Dansby, 3CDC's new point person for development in the neighborhood, took center stage Oct. 19 with the first of three Over-the-Rhine Rap Sessions the agency is hosting at Memorial Hall. The goal of the sessions is to give the community a clearer idea of what 3CDC has done and where it's going -- something residents have longed to hear.

The other sessions will be 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at Memorial Hall to discuss Music Hall Square, as well as from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at Memorial Hall to discuss a neighborhood school and Washington Park.

"Now that we feel confident about the site we've assembled, we can go out and talk about what we've been doing," Dansby said."I think there was a notion that 3CDC wanted something totally different than what everyone else wanted. This will be helpful to clear the air a little bit."

Before becoming 3CDC's Over-the-Rhine director of development in July, Dansby was president of SmartMoney Community Services, a nonprofit organization that provides financial services to needy residents of the region.Based in Over-the-Rhine, SmartMoney established new programs for youth and adults and a homeownership training program under his leadership.

Dansby served in a leadership role to help develop the Over-the-Rhine Comprehensive Plan in 2002, a blueprint for revitalization of the neighborhood that calls for maintaining affordable housing and social services needed by its poorest residents.

As Dansby talks to Over-the-Rhine residents, business owners and landlords about 3CDC's strategy, he stresses how closely the agency's principles are aligned with those laid out in the comprehensive plan.

That's critically important to neighborhood residents, some of whom have grown more nervous as 3CDC has exerted more control in Over-the-Rhine.

The agency has spent more than $9 million buying 98 vacant buildings and 90 vacant parcels in Over-the-Rhine.That's far from a majority of the 500 vacant buildings and 700 vacant lots that fill the massive neighborhood, but it's enough to make 3CDC a key property owner.

Dansby knows some residents have viewed those purchases with suspicion, but he wants them to see 3CDC's control as a benefit. He points to early signs of progress near 12th and Vine streets.
    ...
"Darrick is an excellent person to do that because he's respected so much by the corporate community as well as community leaders."
