YMCA Program Director Allyson Dansby was all smiles as she watched the large boxes being unloaded from a Fitness Systems Inc. truck backed up on the sidewalk in front of the Grist Y.

Dansby said that the shipment represents the bulk of the equipment headed for three Dallas County schools - Tipton, Keith and Martin - and two Selma City schools - School of Discovery and Selma Middle CHAT Academy.

The equipment will be part of a program coordinated by the YMCA in cooperation with the two school districts targeted for the nine middle school PE teachers in the five schools. Curriculum is being written by Bradley Davidson, operations director, and Dansby, who will work with the teachers.

Dansby said all equipment received Tuesday will be delivered Wednesday and Thursday to the five schools. Each school will receive one treadmill, one recumbent bicycle, one elliptical fitness crosstrainer and one four-station gym.

Some technology equipment has not yet been delivered.

Dansby exclaimed, "It is so great for the schools to get cutting-edge technology plus cardio-vascular equipment."

Allyson Dansby, program director with the YMCA, said her role would be to travel to the schools and assist teachers with physical education, deliver equipment and help with tests.

Dansby said the grant was needed because children have had no physical activity since physical education teachers were removed.

"The kids just need to get active," Dansby said.

She added that the grant project will give children 30 minutes a day to exercise.

The grant was applied for in the spring of last year and the YMCA found out it was awarded to them in October.
