The new alliance may irk Capgemini's current North American network solutions partner Cisco Systems, but Capgemini Chief Operating Officer Pierre Danon said today at Supercomm that the consulting firm's relationship with Cisco is still strong. For the TXU deal, Danon said, Cisco was unable to provide the full network integration portfolio TXU requires, which led Capgemini to look for other networking partners.Capgemini, however, will continue to rely on Cisco in the future, he added.

"If the best [networking solution] for a client is a Cisco kit, then we'll use a Cisco kit," Danon said.

Eleven days ago, Pierre Danon was an ambitious and successful French executive who had a great job and had just applied for an even greater one.

Sixteen days ago he was an ambitious and less successful French executive who had no job at all-sacked by his existing employer and turned down by his prospective one.

The story is an ugly one in which everyone loses a great deal.Last December Capgemini, the consulting company, hired Mr Danon as its chief operating officer. For the next 10 months he did a good job (as far as anyone can ever tell).

Then one day a headhunter knocked on his door and asked him if he fancied the better position of CEO of Accor, the French hotels group. He said he did.Keep it quiet, he insisted. But it was not kept quiet. The shortlist got out, and the consultancy was so displeased that it fired him.Accor subsequently decided it didn't want him, either, and hired the co-founder's nephew instead.

So Mr Danon lost his job, and although he received a nice payoff, if I were an employer I'd think hard before hiring anyone so restless.Capgemini lost a perfectly competent COO.

According to Mr Danon the true cost was even greater: the very fabric of his nation has been damaged."It is not good for France," he declared heroically on the day he was fired. While I'm not sure I'd go that far, I do agree that this nasty mess does raise a few questions about job loyalty.

Who is the true villain of the piece? The standard view was put forward in a letter to the Financial Times last week.Capgemini was to blame. The reader claimed the consultancy was behaving like a spoilt baby, that Mr Danon had every right to be ambitious and that the consultancy should be pleased that one of its top people was a contender to lead a big company.
    ...
The consultancy explained that Mr Danon was hired partly to try to prevent quite so many unhappy people from quitting the company. Not easy to do that if he has been trying to leave himself.

    ...
Eircom's chairman, Pierre Danon, is stepping down to become chief executive officer of French telecommunications firm Numericable and Completel.

The state's largest telecommunications company has already started a search for Danon's successor and he is to remain in his current position until a new chairman is appointed.Danon has served as chairman of Eircom for the last two years, assuming his role when the group was sold to Australian investment firm Babcock and Brown.

"As chairman, Pierre played an active role in the progress of a number of significant initiatives including broadband rollout, local loop unbundling and next generation networks," said Rex Comb, CEO of Eircom.

"Pierre has been a tremendous asset to Eircom since he took up his position as chairman and we are sorry to see him go.
    ...
For his part Danon is pleased with the progress made at Eircom over the past two years: "We have significantly accelerated the company's investment in the country's infrastructure, supported by a commitment to invest up to EUR1 billion by the end of 2009, taken major steps to open it to additional competition through local loop unbundling," said Danon.

"In the last nine months, revenues have grown by 5 percent and EBITDA by 9 percent, continuing to deliver strong performance for the company's shareholders, including its employees," he added.
