Jose Danon, Ph.D., P.E., is a structural engineer with more than 30 years of experience. He has designed bridges and built buildings. He's now a professor at the University of South Florida. FOX13 Investigates hired him to independently analyze the cracking problem. We took him to Polk County to see the buses first hand, and showed him videotape as well.

    ...
Danon: "No this is not a cosmetic problem. This is a structural problem." Glenn: "No doubt." Danon: "Without any doubt."

Danon says he came to his conclusion because "(these) pilaster(s) are supporting the roof of the cabin... It's like if you have column supporting the roof of a house." Danon concludes, "the structural integrity of the cabin is compromised by this crack."

The State of Florida has strict guidelines on when buses should be taken off the road. The guidelines say buses should be sidelined "when joint strength or body structural integrity is compromised." So should these buses be carrying children?

Structural engineer Dr. Jose Danon, hired by FOX13, says that's a mistake.

    ...
Danon: "This is compromisng the structural integrity of the cabin. I don't think that this should be an option. They should fix it."

Dr. Danon says the repairs Thomas Built is making in Polk County should make the buses structurally sound.

We contacted the North Carolina based company again, this time to inform the company of Dr. Danon's findings.
    ...
By phone and by letter we offered Thomas Built engineers an opportunity to talk directly with Dr. Danon to discuss the cracking problem. But Thomas Built never responded to our offer.

The company maintains the cracking is cosmetic. Which means school districts all over may be sending children in cracked buses, without having an opportunity to determine whether their buses are structurally safe.
