   David Danon, CEO of mH2O.com, right now emphasizes the latter, with the pro stuff coming as the next logical step:

   "We've spoken to Digidesign, looked at ProTools," says Danon, "and we'll probably get the cheapest version, ProLite, and buy a large enough number of licenses where you can drop the price so that people can just lease it monthly. That's where the market is going.

   So is Danon, whose first step in that direction works even without broadband:
   
   "We're very excited about the fact that we're circumventing most bandwidth requirements today that would be impinged on by large .wav files or even large MP3 files by using the concept of samples and loops. We feel it has been one of the most underutilized concepts on the Web in terms of creating content."
   
   But that's a lead-in to - what else - broadband, convergence, et al:
   
   "At the end of the day, what we're doing really applies itself to the next revolution of the Internet, which is broadband and wireless," boasts Danon.

   David Danon, mH20 founder, a young multilingual polymath with an ear for a good groove, is calling mH20 "the first global online music community."
   
   "For me," says Danon from mH2O headquarters in Manhattan, "one of the great changes that the Web brings at the turn of the millennium is this ability to interact and to [help people] make things together that they couldn't make on their own." Danon has packed a fair amount of experience into his 25 years, graduating from Brown University in 1997 with degrees in mysticism and history, traveling the world, consulting Internet companies in New York, and now, branching out on his own.
   
   Originally, Danon called his site Music Hall, but as the concept broadened, mH20-fluid and ubiquitous--seemed to fit the site better. No doubt the tweaking will continue between the soft launch this week and the hard launch later in April, and then beyond that. Currently, the site has education, workshops, news, bulletin boards, a battle-of the-bands area called Star Tracks, and a fledgling in-house record label.
   
   Danon says that genuine interaction sets his site apart from the rest of the music sites.

   "[Flash] allows you to create amazing vectors and reduces the file size tremendously," says Danon, "but it maintains all sorts of animation and visual integrity when you move from piece to piece on a site, whereas HTML is very jagged and you just scroll up and down.

   Says Danon: "As a kid, I was stymied from playing music, because everything was taught in an academic setting.

   Why can't you figure out a way we could play on the Web?' I was kind of hung up by that question,' says Danon. "I put a pencil to a piece of paper and drew up these different schematics for a site that would have all these different functions. More or less, that was the idea for mH2O."
   
   Although he's using Acid(tm) and Sound Forge® from Sonic Foundry, at the outset, Danon isn't limiting the software options. "Our site is agnostic," says Danon.

   "Dance music, electronica, and hip-hop run the music business right now," says Danon, "because those are the tastes of the age group that matters the most. You can't discount those forms of music, nor can you really deny that they're the easiest forms of music to manipulate using samples. If you want to get into other forms of music, it becomes a little more difficult to manipulate using samples. But you just have to create better samples, with bigger scope and larger breadth of instruments."
   
   With a current collection of 6,000 samples and rising, mH20 is already closing in on having secured the world's largest library of downloadable samples, and quality-drum loops by jazz icon Max Roach, for instance-is a priority to Danon.

   Of course, this heavy reliance on samples as musical building blocks inevitably embroils Danon in the debate over creative authenticity with sample-based music.

   How does Danon feel the industry will respond to mH20' s effort?
   
   "It really depends on how we choose to frame ourselves in relation to them," he says.

   In the end, Danon is cautiously political on the subject of industry rapport: "I'd rather have a friendly relationship with the record labels. At the same time, they knew and I know that their time is more or less over. The pendulum of technology is much more powerful than that of a very corrupt and Mafia-like mentality that has persisted for sixty or seventy years, but largely because information was difficult to transmit." Enter the revolution, already in progress.
   
   "Every one is saying they're scared." Danon says.
