Horace Danner of Lake Ridge, a doctor of educational psychology, went through the dictionary to help words find family. He wanted all words from one root in one place. He spent too much time cross-referencing words to find the root meaning, he wrote in the preface of his book: "The English Tree of Roots and Words from Around the World."

Danner, 72, only had time to do it in between teaching at the University of Maryland and after he finished revising his other book for word nerds: "Discover It! A Better Vocabulary- A Better Way."

"I've always had a proclivity for knowing the backgrounds for words," Danner said. (Proclivity: a natural or habitual tendency.)

He grew up in Clio, Ala., the youngest of 10 children to a cotton farmer. He was the only child to make it through high school, and paid his way through college.

Working behind the counter of a drug store, a regular customer told him he seemed intelligent but had an inadequate vocabulary. Danner began researching unfamiliar words he heard, and later learned Latin roots.

He fought in the Korean War, becoming a Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force, spent time at New Orleans Baptist Seminary as a minister of music education and taught music in Fairfax County Schools. He's taught technical writing at U.Md. University College for 15 years.

"Frankly, I'm a hyper person and I've got to be doing something," Danner said.

Enter "Discover It!," the amended version of a book Danner wrote in 1980.

"If you discover for yourself, you learn better and remember longer," he said.

Readers learn vocabulary by reading words with a common element - the meaning is discovered, rather than memorized, Danner said.

For example, refugee, centrifugal and fugitive all share "fug," which means: to flee. Readers can begin to break down other words with "fug" that may be lesser known, such as nidifugous. It has something to do with fleeing. "Nidi" means nest, so nidifugous refers to leaving the nest almost immediately after hatching, as chickens do.

"The very idea of the way it is constructed, it can't help but be super productive," Danner said.

He said the book is helpful as a supplement in English classes and as a study tool for college entrance exams.
    ...
In construction, if there's a similarity in form, there is most likely a similarity in function, Danner said. The same can apply to vocabulary.

"If there's a similarity in form, there's a similarity in meaning," he said.
