"I don't look at this as a win, I look at this as a means for them (FWP) to not to anything about it," said Frank Danner, a founder of the local Walleyes Unlimited chapter.
    ...
Walleyes Unlimited had four of the five FWP commissioners convinced to repeal the ban, Danner said.
    ...
ALLOWING WALLEYE to be planted in Western Montana lakes would alleviate some of the "bucket biology," where people illegally transplant walleye into Northwest Montana lakes, Danner said.

"My biggest fear is that the frustration level will get so high, people will start doing damage to other fisheries out of spite," Danner said.
    ...
Danner said he thinks Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is a "service organization" and should respond to the wishes of anglers. Region One devotes 90 percent of its budget to native species, Danner claimed, and "that leaves very little to go around for other fisheries," he said.
    ...
The Flathead Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited, meanwhile, has identified 18 lakes that would be suitable for walleye plants, Danner said. Echo Lake and Lake Mary Ronan are on that list, he said.

THERE ARE about 100 members of the local chapter of Walleyes Unlimited.

According to Danner, a board member of the group, FWP is ignoring their demands to have a viable warmwater fishery for walleye. "They need to keep in mind that the people buying the licenses are the people paying the bills," Danner said.
    ...
Planting walleye in Western Montana would alleviate people having to travel such long distances to fish, Danner said.

"People are getting tired of having to drag a $30,000 boat and a $20,000 camper to Tiber (reservoir) to fish," Danner added. "There's no reason why people should have to drag their equipment out of county or out of state to get the fishing they want."

Much of the frustration among anglers is from anglers who have moved here from out of state and were told by FWP to "learn to love trout," Danner said. "We don't think we're getting a fair shake."

Local walleye anglers have been working for 20 years to establish a walleye fishery in Western Montana and, Danner said, "We won't give up."
