An Interview with Emily Danner
...
Emily was baptized Catholic, and received Holy Communion at Queen of Peace. Not long after Emily had completed her fifth year as a public school pupil, her parents became interested in exploring other worship experiences. Emily remembers the Lutheran Church her family attended "as a happy experience." But she especially loved their time spent at Zion Community Church. This church was considered charismatic, and her family loved it because of the wonderful music and songs they learned. The last church that Emily and her family attended before she moved to Grand Rapids, was Oxford Bible Fellowship. There, they enjoyed services that combined liturgy and grand musical leadership. Having experienced a variety of denominations, Emily speaks of her ecumenical upbringing.
...
While a student at Calvin, Emily attended Church of the Servant, which was her first experience worshiping in a Christian Reformed church. Although she liked it, there were hesitations for Emily in becoming a member of a Christian Reformed Church. Unfamiliar doctrines, such as "election/predestination" made her question the theology of the Christian Reform belief system. In time, the attractions far outweighed her hesitations. Emily realized the sincerity of the Calvin faculty and their deep concern and commitment to serve others. In addition, she enjoyed the beautiful liturgies there. She found them to be reverent. She also appreciated the opportunity to break bread with the assembly every Sunday and liked how the service included The Lord's Prayer and the Apostles' Creed.
There are things Emily misses from the charismatic services of her youth. The contemporary praise and worship music, the lifting up of hands to the Lord, and dancing in the aisles remain dear to her heart. For her, they encouraged the freedom to express one's love of the Lord.
...
Most importantly, Emily remains encouraged by family and friends who live and move by the Holy Spirit. She respects those who pray and seek the Lord's will and who believe in the forgiveness of sin. Emily continues to see changes and miracles in people lives and knows they are from God.
Emily believes that, as Jesus taught His disciples, Christians are responsible for telling the Good News.
...
If Emily becomes aware of a person who is searching for meaning in his/her life, she tells that person "To open their heart to God, and let Jesus Christ be their Savior and Lord." She goes on to say that "Jesus will never leave nor forsake them, no matter how big their problems are. He will remain in and with them, through pain and suffering and joy." Emily believes that "Jesus knocks at the door of every heart and waits for us to answer."
...
"God will be found," says Emily, "in the cry of a child, in your mother's wisdom and gentle touch, in the rain and sunshine, in the church or at home, whether you are alone or in a crowd. He cares about us no matter what."
A Teacher's Wisdom :
In conclusion, Emily shared with me her gratitude for the words of Miss Brown, who was her fourth grade teacher.
...
Miss Brown listened as Emily wondered about Jesus, a Jesus who died for all people, even for people thousands of years after His death and resurrection.
...
"Miss Brown gently leaned down into my face and told me that if I were the only person in the world, Jesus would have died on the cross just for me." From that moment to this moment, as a 30 year-old woman, Emily still reminds herself that Jesus loves her that much. -
