That is the day Gayle Dannenberg will join the church as the new music director.

"Gayle is very talented and enthusiastic and will really add a lot of spirit and substance to the church's worship music," commented the Rev. Katherine Lawes, pastor of the church.

Dannenberg, who grew up in Sycamore, comes to this position with an extensive background and experience in music. With encouragement from a family that loved music and loved to sing, she began her interest in music at an early age and devoted seven years to piano lessons. Throughout her school years she participated in bands and choirs, playing saxophone and then bassoon in her school band.

In addition to her many years of private lessons and experience with various instruments, Dannenberg studied music academically for a year as a music major at Waubonsee Community College. She also spent a year playing bassoon in the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra.

Gayle began her work with music in a church setting as director of the youth choir for a church in Somonauk. She took on a new instrument, the organ, when the minister asked if she would like to play for their new Saturday night service. During this time, she also began working with St. Paul's Church in Hinckley, where she started an adult choir.

At St. Paul's, she initiated a Praise Band by inviting everyone in the congregation to participate. She realized she had struck a chord when a woman responded by getting out the trombone that she hadn't played in 50 years to become a part of the band, and another member, a man, bought not one, but two saxophones, one alto and one tenor, to join in.

"Getting as many people involved in the music of the church as possible is very important to me," said Dannenberg.

To do this, Dannenberg strives to meet the needs of each age group in the church by working into a church service music that speaks to everyone of all generations.

"If there is one person who comes to worship having just experienced the death of a loved one, there should be one piece of music that is familiar to them and that gives them comfort," explained Dannenberg. "At the same time, I want to have music that captures the interest of the youth of the congregation."

To accomplish this, Dannenberg may start the service with a classic hymn that everyone is familiar with and end with a contemporary one with an upbeat tempo to lift people's spirits as they leave the service.

While Dannenberg lists "working with kids" and "contemporary music" among the things she loves, finding new music is her passion. She loves to spend her free time searching the Internet for new Christian music.

When she needs a break from her role as music director, Dannenberg turns to music in a different form. As a member of the Celebration Carrell at a Methodist church in DeKalb, she is one of 80 who raise their voices in song.

"This is where I go to get renewed," said Dannenberg.

Having stayed at home for 15 years to raise her two daughters, she is now looking forward to her new challenge at the Community Congregational Church.

She will be involved in all aspects of the church's music programs, including directing the youth choir and playing the organ and piano during the worship services. She hopes to start a bell choir, and looks forward to continuing to develop the youth music program.

According to Pastor Kathy, the growing community is bringing in people who are looking for more programs and varying worship styles. At the same time, the church cannot lose sight of the needs of the current congregation. With the new music director, the church hopes to meet the needs of both.

"I am delighted to have Gayle join us, to expand and build upon the music programs we have already begun."
