In Portland, which began its streetcar line in July 2001 and now has an eight-mile loop, some retailers have used the line to boost business, said Kay Dannen, a community relations manager for Portland Streetcar Inc.
Dannen, whose non-profit organization promotes the streetcar, said a tire company along the line gives customers ride tickets to go to work and return to pick up their vehicles, while a hotel gives its customers tickets as part of their stay.
"There are a lot of different ways to engage the community," Dannen said. -
