Wanda Danley, fair spokeswoman, said that for the past few years Cleveland County Court Clerk Rhonda Hall and Cleveland County District No. 3 Commissioner Leroy Krohmer have had spirited contests.
...
Then last year, Leroy won," Danley said.
...
A week before the contest is set to take place, Danley said about 60 people have been invited to milk.
"Participation is by invitation only," she said.
Those invited include county elected officials, politicians and representatives of local businesses and civic groups.
Contestants are assigned to a team that is comprised of four people -- who will attempt to milk -- and a coach, she said.
Danley said this is really a fun event to watch, and the crowds really get into cheering for their teams.
The coaches try to help their team members and also act as cheerleaders.
She said it is really pretty funny sometimes when novice milkers are told how to milk a cow.
In the past, some have said that they get their milk from the grocery store and that they had no clear idea of how the milk gets from the cow to the carton.
The teams are judged on five points: which gets the most milk; which gets the least milk, the best costumes, the best technique and the most spirited coach. Each team member has 30 seconds to get as much milk as possible into a bucket.
The Celebrity Cow Milking Contest always makes for hilarious fun for the participants and the spectators, Danley said.
The four cows providing the milking apparatus for the contest are to be pitied.
