"You don't hear much about the University of Iowa in this part of the state," said Vicki Danley, 53, who earned her law degree from UI.She is the Fremont County Attorney in the southwest Iowa hamlet of Sidney.
"People here think about Iowa State (University) a lot because ours is a farming community. It's the main way people make a living," she said.
Making a living has been more difficult, especially the past two years, as lawmakers at the Statehouse in Des Moines have been figuring out ways to make up for a revenue shortfall totaling hundreds of millions of dollars.
The shortfall has rocked the state's economy - and UI's budget, which has absorbed nearly $60 million in cuts.
Unlike in Danley's hometown, UI's financial crisis has been frequent front-page news in Johnson County where the school also is the area's largest employer.
