   The result is one of the most important pieces of contemporary art to come out of Maine in recent years, said Susan Danly, a curator at the Portland Museum of Art who saw the work during a private studio visit earlier this month.
   
   "Tom is one of the few artists who has gone out on a limb and attempted to tackle these issues, particularly in Maine, where we like our work pretty and not troubling," Danly said.
