Kyle Danielson is an R.N. with a B. Sc. in Nursing. He will be returning to Malawi on January 14, this time accompanied by Alanna Jackson. He gave us a vivid account of his first six-week volunteer mission, and accompanied this with his own slides.

Kyle noted that NGO's and their supporters look with most favour on long-term constructive, self-supporting developments, but short-term relief, such as the re-feeding programs, are a necessary precursor.
In answer to a question, Kyle said that Rotary had built a staff house for the Clinic, an essential facility to attract staff as otherwise there is no place to live. Kyle and Alanna are going back on January 14 and have raised $7,500 which, in partnership with Health Partners International has been raised to $60,000.

Kyle was thanked by David Maxwell, who praised his excellence as a public speaker as well as his professional looking slides. -

In 2005, a native Nanaimo man and nurse, Kyle Danielson, traveled to Africa only to see first hand just how desperate the situation was with the native people. Under Kyle's leadership, the school of nursing at UVIC campaigned and was able to raise $6,000 for the village of Mtunthama. As a result of the fundraising accomplishment made by the group of UVIC students, Kyle is now able to bring enough medicine into Malawi to help 10,000 people. -

Kyle reminded members that Malawi had a population of 12.5 million people and less than 100 doctors. The clinic supports a population of about 310,000 people, who, like the rest of their countrymen, are subsistence farmers and suffer from HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, food shortages and famine. Many basics of life that we take for granted, such as clean water and electricity, are absent, and, consequently, many diseases are actually preventable. Kyle showed some emotionally moving pictures throughout the presentation. It is one of 43 malnutrition clinics in the whole of Malawi, and has 6 nurses and 2 support officers. Between 100 and 250 people are seen every day. The clinic is privately funded, with Kyle personally raising $110,000. A major current program is the construction of a HIV/AIDS Counselling and Testing Centre. An example of how much our money can procure is, for instance, that $700 will buy 10 medical packages that will provide up to 10,000 treatments. Kyle's next trip is in December; it takes up to 4 days to get there, and is totally funded by individuals donating Air Miles. His email address is kyledanielson@gmail.com (Note that Kyle would welcome Air Mile donations from members).
