   Mrs. Danielson, a revert to Islam of seventeen years, joined Universal School staff in 1990, before school doors opened, as Office Manager. She has had extensive teaching experience in the community, and for the past fifteen years, has led women's study groups. She has also worked with the council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago (CIO) in their interfaith committee. She is a member of the Universal Islamic studies department. She has earned a bachelor's degree in biology with minors in theology and computer processing.

   We wanted them "to meet our students," said Karen Danielson, a teacher at the suburban Muslim school. Eventually, students from the two schools might combine their resources to work on social service projects, she said.
   
   All that lies in the future, but for now, the second of two visits between the two parochial schools was being declared a big success by its organizers.
   
   Fuzia Jarad, an English teacher at Universal School, had drawn her own conclusions. "It's just about being human," she said. When it came to temperament, attitudes and most of the other matters that contribute to their personalities, she said, there are few real differences between the students.
   
   Providing an experience in which that reality can be learned, or re-learned as the case may be, is what motivates this program.
   
   Universal School offers pre-school through Grade 12 programs to students who travel from locations all over Chicago, a spokesperson for the school said. Early Wednesday morning, a bus left Universal for Chicago's Southwest Side. Less than one month before, Maria students had made a trip to Universal School.

   Even this weekend, some Universal School students are scheduled to join forces with a suburban Catholic parish to work at a homeless shelter, Danielson said.
   
   In those difficult days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, though, a Maria High School teacher took the initiative and approached the Muslim school, suggesting some type of program or event that would allow students to interact right away. The result of Luchara Sayles' proposal was a visit by Maria students to the Bridgeview school.
   
   With the visit yesterday, that courtesy was being reciprocated, though the atmosphere was anything but formal or overly uncomfortable. Accommodations had been made for the dietary restrictions and prayer observances of Islam, a Maria spokesperson said. Aside from that, though, students had been grouped in a "shadowing" arrangement that would allow all of them to see what a typical school day is like for a Maria student.
