Julie Danielson, owner of Lavender-n-Lace in Eaton, wanted to sell Hewitt's products after believing her stuff stuck out in a craft show Danielson recently attended.

"It was unique, rather than run-of-the-mill," Danielson said, "and she's making new cards now that people are loving, and her bookmarks are really popular too. Each piece has its own character."

Seven years ago, Hewitt didn't even know she could draw, let alone make a living selling artwork. That's how a big, crazy, 90-pound lab inspired her to dig into her artistic skills. She always prided herself about how she was one of the few who could handle the big lug, and at the end of the babysitting, she had the lab and was taking him to her parents' car. Of course, as soon as the lab saw her parents' car, he went nuts and pulled Hewitt down some stairs, breaking her arm in three places.

Forced to sit still, she had to set aside her gardening and woodworking and took up organic staining, the process of making art with plants, fruit or flowers by pressing them against paper.

"I always say you can eat my paintings," she said.

She didn't know what she had when she finished, other than a healed arm, so she took her work into a local studio. They were quiet at first, and Hewitt figured they were trying to figure out how to tell her she was terrible. It turns out, they wanted her to do her own show.

Since then she has won many awards and last month took office as president of the Greeley Art Association. Sure, she only makes half of what she once made, and she's had to sacrifice some things (she asks if you want to buy a Mercedes convertible), but she said it was worth it.
