Carla Danielson, Parent, Board Member (cdanielson@riverheightscharter.org)
Carla Danielson is the single-mother of a 15-year old son, who was a fifth generation in his home school district. Carla assumed the traditional school approach was the only alternative to an academic diploma. Her son, coming from a small parochial school, soon did not feel settled in a large high school. Being a high achiever, strong-willed and a very independent thinker, David soon became bored & restless. As a parent, Carla became frustrated in the one-size fits all approach to learning and with an administration that simply was too overwhelmed and seemed to favor a certain "type" of student. Charter schools were never thought of as an option, as loyalty to their local school alma mater did not allow for other options. After much research, however, Carla became a passionate supporter of Charter Schools. "The idea that we live in a world of options and choices, to finally have these same freedoms for our kids when it comes to their best approach to their learning-style has been liberating." Carla is a strong believer in education and learning to further one self, but also to enrich one's own self esteem and worth. Carla herself is a life-long learner and received her B.S. from St. Cloud State University in Communications/Public Relations, Research, and Political Science. Carla was recently accepted into a graduate program to receive her Masters in Clinical/Counseling Psychology. She currently works out of her home in advertising and is in the process of developing a non-profit to help vulnerable people with life challenges. She will provide initial parental input in school development and will serve on the interim board.
