Beverly Danielson thought she was being called to the principal's office for a chat about the bugs she keeps in her classroom for nature study.
Dread turned to happiness when she learned she was the 2006 Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year.
"I had no idea, I was so surprised," she said. "I am so truly honored to be the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year. When you've got great kids and you've got great parents, the job is easy."
Danielson, 45, is in her second year as a second-grade teacher at Fletcher Elementary. She taught at Rugby Middle School for 11 years.
She also founded and served as director of Mud Creek Baptist Church's Weekday Education Center where she worked for nine years. She graduated from Mars Hill with a degree in elementary education and earned special education certification from Western Carolina University. She is currently working on a degree in education administration from Gardner-Webb University.

Danielson, who is also Fletcher Elementary's 2006-07 Teacher of the Year, is "very deserving" of the honor, said Fletcher Elementary Principal Shirley McGee.
...
"I think every teacher has this, but Ms. Danielson just has a true love for teaching and her students," McGee said.
...
As the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year, Danielson received a $1,000 grant for the school, a $100 gift card to buy supplies for her classroom, a Teacher of the Year polo shirt and a personalized certificate.
