   "Fewer high schools are ranking anymore," says Sally Daniels, director of undergraduate admission for Augsburg College in Minneapolis and president-elect of the Minnesota Association for College Admission Counseling. She says discrepancies in academic standards among high schools make class rank an unreliable indicator of high-school success.

   "If ever there's a nice time in your life to do a little bragging, it's during the admissions process," Daniels says. She encourages students to be bold. Those years keeping stats for the track team, or painting houses for charity, or writing for the school newspaper may say something spectacular about a potential student. Including samples of a student's work with the admissions packet may also make a statement. It's perfectly appropriate, Daniels says, to send design portfolios, newspaper clippings, or research papers.
