2007 John Arthur Wilson Memorial Lecturer -- Richard P. Daniels
The 48th John Arthur Wilson Memorial Lecture will be presented at the Congress by Richard P. Daniels at 1:15 pm on Thursday, June 21, in the Capital Ballroom.
Mr. Daniels, while not a scientist by training, is like many of the early leather researchers in the ALCA, a tanner turned researcher. After obtaining degrees in Leather Technology and working in many capacities in commercial tanneries he went on to investigate many aspects of hide preservation and tannery waste stream management. While his publications are primarily found in Industrial Journals, they are widely respected and many have become the basis for education courses in the UK, the EU and in China. A recent series on the basics of tanning has been translated into Mandarin and is currently being used for training purposes in China.
After Mr. Daniels obtained an advanced level degree in Chemistry, Physics and Applied Mathematics he followed that with a Leather Science Degree from the British School of Leather Technology, in Northampton, UK. He also holds a Masters Degree from the City & Guilds of London Institute.
He is a Fellow of the Society of Leather Technologists and Chemists and a Member of the City and Guilds Insignia Award Association.
Mr. Daniels has a broad background in the leather industry. He was Technical Director for Abington Mills Tannery, Technical Group Director for Stimpson Perkins PLC (a group of five tanneries) and the Works Director for Abington Mills Tannery. Since 1987 he has been an Industrial Consultant providing services for organizations and companies in twenty different countries. He has been a lecturer at the British School of Leather Technology and conducted UNIDO seminars in Zimbabwe, Kenya and India. Since 1993 he has been the Technical Editor of World Leather Magazine for Tanning and the Environment.
While Richard has investigated a wide variety of subjects related to leather manufacturer his best known work is on the application of reed-bed technology to treat tannery effluents as an alternative to "high tech/high cost" secondary effluent treatment systems. He demonstrated that the reed-bed technology could treat effluents containing proteins, dyestuffs, poly-phenols, lignins, acrylic/butadiene/polyurethane resins, fat-emulsions, wetting agents and other complex chemicals. Based on the results of his work UNIDO sponsored a $500,000 dollar grant for the establishment of reed bed technology in South East Asia. -
