    Outside shooting specialist Nate Daniels has left the University of Louisville basketball program to play for defending NAIA champion Mountain State University in Beckley, W. Va.

    Daniels, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound senior-to-be from Escondido, Calif., did not return to Louisville when his teammates did at the beginning of this month, and U of L coach Rick Pitino said he wasn't sure of Daniels' intentions as late as yesterday morning.

    That same day, however, Daniels was in Beckley announcing that he would play his final college season with Mountain State.Daniels did not return phone messages yesterday.

    "We've given Nate his release," Pitino said in a statement released yesterday afternoon.

    Daniels averaged 5.6 points and 1.6 rebounds as a junior last season after transferring from Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he had been among the nation's top junior-college scorers.He hit 40of97 three-point attempts (41.2 percent) last season and provided instant offense at times.But he also could be a defensive liability.

    Daniels told The Register-Herald newspaper in Beckley that he decided to leave U of L in late May and hinted that he expected more playing time than he averaged last season.

    University of Louisville guard Nate Daniels is transferring to NAIA power Mountain State after playing only one season with the Cardinals.

    The 6-foot-7 Daniels appeared in all 30 games last season, averaging 5.6 points and 1.6 rebounds.He went 40-for-97 from three-point range, the highest percentage among Cardinals who started at least one game.

    Daniels transferred to Louisville in 2003 from Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.He will have one season of eligibility remaining.
