    Seeing is Believing

Harry Daniels, a senior partner in a leading Boston law firm, had struggled with keratoconus for almost 20 years when he came to the Boston Foundation for Sight for help with his vision. The condition of his corneas severely limited his ability to function without the Foundation's Boston Scleral Lens.Unexpectedly, the cornea of his left eye developed a perforation and he underwent urgent corneal transplant surgery. While waiting the customary year or more for the transplant to heal, disaster struck again, this time he lost the sight in his right eye.No longer able to read or drive, his life had come to a halt.

The prospects were grim; it would take another six months before the transplanted cornea in the left eye would have useful vision, and even that was uncertain. The unique design of the Boston Scleral Lens enabled it to be fitted to his still-healing left eye and he left the Foundation's offices with 20/20 vision in that eye, seeing better than he had in decades. Now a member of the Foundation's Board of Directors, Harry declares: "The Foundation truly works miracles everyday!"

"I don't think it is unreasonable to expect that you know how to speak with correct grammar when you walk into my office," offered Harry Daniels, an African-American attorney and senior partner at one of the city's premier law firms, Hale & Dorr."When I walk into a meeting, my clients expect me to talk in a certain way - in proper English - and they should.I don't think that means you are copping out or compromising who you are.It reflects adaptability, which I think is important."

    ...
Daniels has spoken to teens interning with the Boston Bar Association about proper workplace behavior. He said it was the determination of his teachers and the support of his family that motivated him to aspire to work in a prominent law firm.Good jobs, he said, are not necessarily reserved for the white upper-class.

"You don't need to come from positions of privilege in order to succeed," said Daniels, 57, adding that he is the son of an unwed teen mother and was raised by his grandparents in Alabama.

And while many companies have adopted "casual Fridays," some businesses, including financial institutions, have not loosened their conservative norms.
