   So when Fabienne Daniels, who runs a weekend French club and summer camp, says to Virginia, "Cherie, est-ce que tu peux me chercher un bol, s'il te plait?" Virginia knows exactly what to do.
   
   She gets a bowl for an art project they're doing at the summer camp held in a rented hall at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Newark. When she's finished with another project on the other side of the room, Virginia says, "J'ai fini."
   
   These days, bilingual and foreign language immersion programs are becoming more common in elementary, middle and high schools.

   "You can't teach with a chalkboard at this age," Daniels says. Preschool minds are like sponges, soaking up all that is offered to them.
   
   Because they're still learning their mother tongue, young children grasp vocabulary and expressions in foreign languages easily, without having to translate.
   
   "They understand the meaning naturally," said Daniels, who also teaches French at Wilmington Montessori School to children as young as 2. But not all children speak French at the same time. "When they are ready, they will speak," Daniels says.
   
   In her weekend French club and summer camp children learn French songs, history, table manners and how to cook simple dishes such as flan. The theme of this year's summer camp was holidays.
   
   "You cannot teach a language without culture," Daniels said.

   We're very sorry to tell you that Fabienne Daniels, our French teacher, will leave us at the end of the month. Fabienne has wanted a full-time position.
