Although thousands of residents were in shelters last year, most went home within days of the storms, said Don Daniels, St. Lucie County emergency management coordinator.

"A majority of the people really don't want to stay at shelters. They're going to camp out in their damaged houses to protect them," he said.

If more than 500 people need to be moved from shelters, the county will enlist the Red Cross to get churches and other facilities to help take overflow, Daniels said.

A high school being built near Windmill Point Elementary and a second K-8 school in the works for western Port St. Lucie also will withstand catastrophic winds, along with several buildings being built by Port St. Lucie.

'Maybe one day we'll be able to drop the regular sites altogether,' Daniels said.
