    TUNKHANNOCK - The Tunkhannock Area School Board almost didn't approve the retirements of three veteran principals Dec. 16.High school principal Jack Gallo, assistant principal Frank Constant and elementary principal Dick Daniels will retire at the end of the school year.

    Mehoopany principal Richard Daniels said Monday that he believes that around a dozen students and one kindergarten teacher were affected by what is scientifically known as the human parovirus (B19).According to Daniels, a girl in one of the school's classrooms apparently had a rash on her face and may have infected others or been the recipient of an infection from another student who gave it to her and a kindergarten teacher at Mehoopany.The teacher was initially treated at Tyler Memorial Hospital for kidney and liver ailments, then transferred to Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton.She said that a blood test confirmed that she had the B19 infection.The teacher said Monday evening that she had been off from school on sick leave for three weeks, and was told by her doctor that the duration of her illness was not typical "and probably just complicated by pneumonia setting in."

    Daniels said that in adults, the disease has the potential to be serious for pregnant women and persons whose immune systems may be compromised.

    Dick Daniels, the Mehoopany Elementary School's present principal, updated the alumni on the progress of rebuilding the new school, which was heavily damaged in a fire April 15, 2002.The teachers and staff plan to move back in from a temporary school in the district's administration building in Tunkhannock sometime in early August, he said.He invited the alumni to a rededication of the school, planned for late September or early October.He recalled visiting Mehoopany to play a basketball game as a sixth-grader.The gym floor was half wood and half cement, which made for some very interesting shots, he said, chuckling.
