Stricter federal pollution controls starting next year could raise prices by 10 percent and cause steep hikes in operating costs, said Brian Daniels, account manager for Hoekstra Transportation in Troy.
He provided a review last week for the Merrill Board of Education.
Today's typical cost for a 71-seat bus is about $63,000. Daniels told Merrill board members that federal requirements will add about $6,000 to the cost of an engine. Filters and a new type of diesel fuel, cleaner but providing fewer miles per gallon, will tack on thousands of dollars in annual operating costs, he said.
