Teachers Amy Daniels and Suzanne Mayer work with up to 40 different children a week, more than half of them Latino. They focus on reading, math, writing, problem solving and test taking and send each student home, every day, with a progress report.
"We're reaching kids who really need what we have to offer," said Daniels, who like Mayer used to teach in the Durham Public Schools. Some of their students, often referred to them by teachers, have learning disabilities, psychological problems or speak no English."They always talk about the group that falls through the cracks," she said."I think that's what we are."
The women, who work 10 or 15 hours a week, say they could serve twice as many children if they could afford to put in more time. The Little River Community Complex, and northern Durham County, deserves more public support, they said.
"To have gone as long as they have with no public funding it's really amazing," Mayer said.
