UHRICHSVILLE - Kyle Daniell is moving up to the head girls' basketball coaching position at Claymont High.

The 30-year-old Daniell was hired at a Board of Education meeting Wednesday night. He served as the varsity assistant coach for the Mustangs last season and was the junior varsity coach the year before that.

"I feel confident that we can turn the corner with this program," said Daniell, who has been a health teacher at Claymont for six years. "I want to use our talent to its strength and leave no stone unturned."

A 1998 graduate of Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Daniell prefers an up-tempo style of basketball.

"I believe in the transition game and like to go up and down the floor," he observed, adding that the Mustangs will have seven letter-winners back next season.

DENNISON - Claymont Board of Education met in special session Monday night to accept a memorandum of understanding stipulating that high school health teacher Kyle Daniell resign his supplementary contract as girls' varsity basketball head coach following "inappropriate activities" that took place Sept. 23.

The board would not comment on the nature of the activities that resulted in the memorandum, which was the subject of an executive session at the meeting's opening.

The memorandum of understanding between Daniell, the board and the Claymont Education Assn. said that in addition to resigning his coaching position, Daniell would be docked five days' pay starting last Thursday and would not teach during those five days. Also, Daniell agreed to seek counseling to address the conduct and not to engage in inappropriate activities in the future. The board agreed not to seek further action on the matter or to note the incident in other documents such as Daniell's personnel file.

The memorandum also notes that the board and CEA agree the action will not serve as precedent, is applicable only to Daniell and "to the extent that it is necessary to carry out this agreement may be in conflict with collective bargaining agreement between the parties."
