In 1994 he set up an interim management business which he ran for 10 years. For 3 of those years he was Chairman of the Interim Management Association when it was re-named, re-branded and re-launched.

Not for nothing did the Interim Management Association (IMA) recently create the role of "industry champion" for Ian Daniell. He celebrated the interim manager's craft in The Personnel Manager's Yearbook by writing: "Mysterious board-level executives breeze in from out of the ether, attack the problem like a tornado and depart, not only having created new and virgin ground, but having re-established the farms, rebuilt the towns and given everybody a future."
OK, so maybe Daniell has watched The Wizard of Oz a few too many times, but the IMA's past president is clearly passionate about the profession he represents. He tells People Management that, according to his latest figures, UK employers spend about £600 million a year on interim managers, with around £150 million of this business going via agencies. He estimates that there are 6,000 active interims employed on an average daily rate of £680, adding that the average length of assignment is 120 working days (six months).

Meanwhile, the IMA, which represents 27 of the country's biggest interim management providers, announced new appointments to its executive committee in addition to the new role for Daniell.
Daniell reports that the most noticeable new trend in interim management is the growing demand for it from the public sector. "It is now accounting for a third of both assignments and leads coming in. It's becoming a vital part of our market," he says.
