An attraction to lists is not uncommon in the hiking world, said Gene Daniell, former chairman of the New Hampshire Four Thousand Footer Club.
"People are to some extent obsessive-compulsive. People are collectors," he said.
...
Mr. Daniell climbed all 48 New Hampshire 4,000-footers in each month of the year, over the course of 19 years. He called the feat "just a game I invented for myself."
"I just like to see the mountains in different conditions," Mr. Daniell said.
Nocturnal winter conditions seemed to "peak" the interest of one club member.
"We had one guy who wanted to be on each summit at midnight in winter, and he accomplished that," Mr. Daniell recalled.
He also described a hiker nicknamed Cave Dog, who trained himself to go without sleep for extended periods and climbed all 48 peaks in less than four days. -
