Terry Daniels, an analyst with Edward Jones, said Tuesday's deal is part of a plan for Intel to redesign its microprocessors and related products every two years, instead of every five years as it has been doing.

"It allows them to focus more on their core and get out of a business they weren't really that successful at," he said.

Terry Daniels, a national technology analyst with Edward Jones, said the sentiment among investors is cautious but positive.

"The tech segment has had a very good run since the beginning of the year.In large part, that is due to many people feeling we reached a bottom for many sectors in '01," Daniels said.

During the first half of the year, he said, many companies nationally focused on cost cutting. That included elimination of jobs or closing unprofitable lines. Now, companies such as Intel are showing increases on the bottom line, with greater total revenues.

"These guys have fixed their businesses, cut out a bunch of costs and set themselves up to be more profitable than what they were before because they are operating more leanly," Daniels said.
