Patty Daniel, a nurse at the Peripheral Vascular Lab at UNC Hospitals, has volunteered at the IFC Clinic for more than 10 years and worked with Carey often.

"He's particularly attuned to the needs of [homeless] people," Daniel said."He just sets the tone for that place in the respect and compassion that he shows consistently for all of the patients that come."

Daniel said she remembers one night when Carey treated a man in his 70s with an extremely low heart rate.She said that somehow he managed to talk the reluctant patient into going to the hospital.
