1. TimesDispatch.com | Key in New Kent: balance
www.timesdispatch.com/servlet/ - [Cached]Published on: 11/1/2003 Last Visited: 11/1/2003
The two candidates squaring off are Mark S. Daniel and D.M. "Marty" Sparks.
...
Daniel, 41, has lived in New Kent for 30 years and has been a member of the Planning Commission for eight years. He says he knows New Kent and its people.
He also is a believer in strong schools. "The greatest threat to our real estate values is a perception that the school system is not up to par," Daniel said.
An entrepreneur and businessman, Daniel, who attended J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, is a former president of the Chamber of Commerce.
He says the county needs to take action to provide sewer and water so businesses can thrive and tap the river of travelers on I-64.
Daniel says a balance must be struck between business and residential growth, and that business especially needs to be encouraged in historic areas of commerce.
"We've reached a time when some action needs to be taken," Daniel said.
He believes his business experience and leadership skills will be a plus in dealing with the county's budget.
