Both long and complex, Chikin Shitahaku No Sai is one of several katas that are required of any student wishing to grade for the rank of Sho Dan. Sensei Tamayose's gaze was exacting and he always made sure that each student's posture, stance, and hand positions were satisfactory to him before we were allowed to go on to the next movement. Over the course of the weekend his expectations rose considerably and all of the students made ever effort to try and meet his very high standards. Waiting their turn The Dan ranks and those senior kyu ranks who were grading for Sho Dan this year received particularly close scrutiny from Sensei Tamayose when it was their turn on the dojo floor.

I hold the rank of Go Dan in Shotokan Karate (FSKA) from Shihan Kenneth Funakoshi, Chief Instructor of the Funakoshi Shotokan Karate Association, and like Shihan Funakoshi, Sensei Tamayose's very high standards, and his ability to draw out the best in you makes training under his watchful eye a both a privilege, and challenge. I am very pleased to be a member of the Ryukyu Kobudo Tesshinkan and to have the opportunity to study this original Okinawan martial art under the guidance of such an excellent kobudo teacher as Sensei Tamayose. Where ever he travels Sensei Tamayose brings to those students fortunate enough to train with him, a wealth of knowledge, and his undying passion for all that the art of Okinawan kobudo has to offer. He is an unsurpassed teacher with the rare gift of being able to truly convey his message, and the art of kobudo, to all of the students he comes in contact with, regardless of their rank or their personal experience.

SHO DAN - NI DAN - SAN DAN GRADING
    ...
This year during our dojo's Annual Summer Camp and Dan Grading which was held from June 24th - 26th, five students graded for the rank of Shodan, one student graded for the rank of Ni Dan, and three students graded for the rank of San Dan, all under the watchful eyes of the grading panel, and their family and friends.
    ...
Later that evening Sempai was promoted to the rank of San Dan later at our annual awards banquet. Copy cats Sempai Cathy and Sempai Amy paired up to work on a new series of drills. They were also promoted in rank later that evening, Sempai Cathy to the rank of San Dan and Sempai Amy to the rank of Ni Dan. Both students are long time members of the dojo and their promotion was well deserved. Pointers from the teacher Sensei Hayashi made a point of going around the dojo and working with each group individually to make sure that the finer details were clearly understood by all concerned. Sensei Hayashi's years of dedication to the art of kobudo were clearly visible in his technique. Waiting their turn Newly promoted Sho Dan's, Sempai Uwe Bartley, Sempai Diane Luszniak, and Sempai Roberta Hutchinson work on their basics while waiting for Sensei Hayashi to get around to their group. Checking the results Sensei Hayashi kept a close eye on all of the students, not only is saftey always a concern when doing any form of weapons training, he was also looking for correct technique to be sure that all of the students developed good basics.

Sensei Richard Kim, 10 th Dan, Hanshi, of the Zen Bei Butoku-kai, entered the gymnasium and acknowledged with a bow the single sound that resounded from the entire assembly coming to attention. He walked slowly to the center of the room, checked the time on his watch and nodded ever so slightly.
    ...
Once a student has achieved their last brown belt, or 1 st kyu, they will in all likelihood have been training karate for about 3 to 4 years, at which time in many dojos they can normally expect to grade for their first level of black belt, or Sho Dan, within the coming year.
    ...
In the end the time it takes to reach the rank of Sho Dan will differ for each individual student.
    ...
I guarantee that if you were made a 10 th Dan tomorrow it would not make your kata or your techniques one bit better than they are at this very moment in time. In fact the complete opposite would probably start to happen, the rank would go to your head, you would begin to feel that there is nothing left to learn, you would start to think that you are now qualified to teach, and you would probably quit training with the same level of intensity, and before you know it you would be going backwards, and in most cases without even knowing it. What a shame that would be, and all becasue you thought you were better than you really were. Gichin Funakoshi sensei, the "Father of Shotokan karate" never awarded a rank higher than 5 th Dan in his lifetime. He always considered this rank the ultimate pinnacle of success, and many of his most senior students despite a lifetime of training never accepted a higher rank. In fact prior to the end of World War II and despite the number of students he had it is said that Gichin Funakoshi sensei only awarded the rank of 5 th Dan, twelve times during his life.
