Conservation Officer Pam Daley with the Department of Natural Resources had been speaking to the Cedar Lake Historical Association when she was notified of a possible spill.

Daley said two calls had come from Cedar Lake residents to the DNR's Michigan City office.

"Before someone is sent out, they want to know how serious the problem is," Daley said, "I said it was serious."

Daley said the substance was visible not only on the water, but also on the pier structures and on the concrete breakwater.
