"It's been a huge task for everybody not just the local area level but also state and federal levels and we've had better networking now than we've ever had in the past and I've been involved in the last 30 years," said Mike Daley, Chief, Eastwood VFD, WVDOH.

Jim Rose with the Regional Threat Preparedness of the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department organized the event and Daley said the idea came from an inoperable communications meeting.

A fire gutted a home at 53 Null Lane off West Virginia 47 in Kanawha, said Chief Mike Daley of the Eastwood Volunteer Fire Department. The homeowner, Denzil Null, and his wife were home at the time of the fire but escaped unharmed, Daley said.
    ...
Daley said the fire appeared to be accidental in nature and was likely caused by an electrical problem near an aquarium. The Wood County Fire Investigation Team was still conducting an investigation Tuesday evening.

The Nulls did not have insurance on the home. They had secured a place to stay Tuesday night and the Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross was providing assistance to the family, Daley said.

"They do have a place to stay for the night," he said.

The fire call went out around 4 p.m. and firefighters from Eastwood, Mineral Wells and Waverly volunteer fire departments responded, Daley said.Heavy smoke was billowing from the structure when officials arrived on the scene.

Daley said the residence was a mobile home that included some additions.

"When we arrived on the scene it was about 40 percent involved in flames.I would say it's a 50 percent loss," Daley said.

Half of the home sustained fire damage while there was heavy smoke damage throughout about 75 percent of the home, Daley said. There also was some water damage.

The Nulls lost a lot of possessions in the fire, Daley said.

"A lot of interior property was destroyed," he said.

Daley said Tuesday's warm temperatures contributed to at least one firefighter becoming overheated.
    ...
Daley said Orr was not injured and did not require transport to the hospital.
    ...
That is a factor whenever you're fighting a fire," Daley said.

Paramedics check firefighters' vitals periodically at the scene of structure fires, Daley said. The practice is part of standard operating procedure for fire departments, he said.

Tuesday's fire was the first time the Eastwood VFD was able to use its new engine truck at the scene of a structure fire, Daley said. The vehicle, a 2000 Pierce, performed well at the scene, he said.

WALKER — Arson is suspected in a fire that engulfed a vacant mobile home at 258-1 Atkinson Ridge Road Friday, said Mike Dailey, deputy chief of the East Wood Volunteer Fire Department.

The home had been vacant for years and no one was injured, although it did take firefighters several hours to get the blaze under control, he said. The fire department received the call around 8 p.m. Friday, he said.

"It looks like someone may have driven by and started it, but we are not sure if it was arson," he said.

Dailey said the owner of the building is David Modesitt and that it was a total loss.
    ...
The Lubeck VFD was on standby at the East Wood station and a Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital ambulance responded to the scene in case any firefighters required medical treatment, which none did, Dailey said.

Eastwood Volunteer Fire Department deputy Chief Mike Daley said recent dry weather has created prime conditions for brush fires.

Daley said Hennessee was burning trash on his property when the fire grew out of control and consumed the outbuildings.
    ...
Daley said the incident could have been a lot worse.

'This could have easily been a large brush fire due to the close proximity of the woods,' Daley said.

Daley said the Eastwood VFD has been involved in fighting several brush fires this year.
