National Parks Conservation Association Opens First Arizona Field Office

Long-time Arizona Conservationist Kevin Dahl Named Program Manager

Tucson, Ariz. - The nation's leading voice for the national parks, the nonprofit National Parks Conservation Association, today announced it has opened its first field office in Arizona, appointing Kevin Dahl as Program Manager of the new Tucson-based office.

"Kevin Dahl's talents and local expertise will greatly benefit our national parks in Arizona--some of the most remarkable in the nation," said National Parks Conservation Association Southwest Regional Director David Nimkin.
    ...
Dahl has more than 30 years of experience advocating for the protection of Arizona's natural resources. He has served as executive director of Native Seeds/SEARCH and the Tucson Audubon Society; as natural resources superintendent of the Pima County, Arizona, Parks & Recreation Department, and in various positions with several local and national conservation groups based in Arizona, most recently the Center for Biological Diversity. He has also published extensively on native plants.

"Viewing the Grand Canyon at age seven was a watershed event for me," said Dahl."I'm proud to join an organization that works to make sure the national parks will continue to provide such experiences for our children and grandchildren."

In his new role with the National Parks Conservation Association, Dahl will be focused on advocating for the protection and preservation of national parklands in Arizona, which include 25 national park sites and historic trails. In particular, he will be working to complete the expansion of Petrified Forest National Park, which was approved by Congress in 2004, but the land has not been purchased. The park is featured in the National Parks Conservation Association's new print public service advertisements, which raise concern about the need for funds to acquire the land within the park's boundaries--now at risk of development.

He will also help to challenge potential uranium mining adjacent to the Grand Canyon, and advocate effective adaptive management of the Colorado River through one of America's most iconic parks. In Tucson, Saguaro National Park is threatened by urban sprawl and development, and Dahl will be spearheading efforts to expand the park and study other areas needing protection.

Since 1919, the nonprofit, nonpartisan National Parks Conservation Association has been the leading voice of the American people in protecting and enhancing our National Park System.

"I'm excited that the president has brought in people who are more focused on the real mission of the national parks," Dahl said.

Water means birds, and "birds attract homo sapiens," the very species the Rio Nuevo planners are so eager to lure, Kevin Dahl, head of the Tucson Audubon Society, told conferees.

"There are more birders than there are golfers," Dahl says. In just the last year birders spent $251 million in Arizona, traveling, eating and sleeping, he says.

"The proposed expansion areas include a variety of unique ecological, geological, hydrological, scenic, historical, and wildlife components, enhanced by the serenity and rural character of the area," said National Parks Conservation Association Arizona Program Manager Kevin Dahl, who also spoke on behalf of the Rincon Institute, the Sonoran Institute, and the Tucson Mountains Association.

Dahl testified at a hearing held by the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands regarding H.R. 715, a bill that would expand the boundary of Saguaro National Park, and study additional lands that warrant protection.

In his testimony, Dahl pointed to the recreational benefits provided by expanding the park, including the expansion of popular trails; the preservation of important habitat and corridors for native wildlife; and the protection of the park's scenic views-all of which is now threatened by Tucson's rapid development and urban sprawl.

"With the Tucson area growing dramatically, and new developments threatening open natural areas, H.R. 715 is critical to preserving this ecologically-rich park," he added.
