    Chief Francis T. D'Ambra came to the Manteo Police Department in March of 1997.Upon his arrival here, The Police Department adopted a community oriented policing philosophy.Under Chief D'Ambra's leadership the department has been awarded the 1999 Governor's Award for Excellence in Community Policing.Chief D'Ambra graduated Magna Cum Laude in Criminal Justice from Mount Olive College in Mount Olive, North Carolina and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree.

    He also holds an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Wake Technical College.Chief D'Ambra served as President of Alpha Phi Sigma (National Criminal Justice Honor Society) at Mount Olive College.Prior to his service in Manteo, Chief D'Ambra served as Chief of Police in Bethel, North Carolina and as a Master Officer with the Raleigh Police Department.In 1993 Chief D'Ambra was named as Pitt County, North Carolina Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.Chief D'Ambra was appointed and continues to serve as a Member of the North Carolina Governor's Crime Commission by Governor James B. Hunt Jr. in 1998.

    Chief D'Ambra is married and has three daughters.He is very active in lay ministry work and in his local church.He enjoys political studies and publishing.

    After confiscating drug paraphernalia and seeing that the driver appeared drunk, Garason ordered him out of the car, said Manteo Police Chief Francis T. D'Ambra Jr.The suspect told the officer that the driver's door didn't work.Garason then told him to get out on the passenger side.After starting to comply, the suspect slammed the door, jumped back behind the driver's seat and sped off, D'Ambra said.

    The car, at speeds of 60 to 70 mph, ran a red light at Sir Walter Raleigh Street, the chief said.As Garason headed through the intersection at about 50 mph, he clipped the rear bumper of another vehicle, causing minor damage to both vehicles and flattening his police car's rear tire.No one was injured.
