Cherrie (Sherry) Curtis, farm Safety Day coordinator from New Boston, Texas, was chosen by the Progressive Agriculture Foundation to receive a Toyota Tundra. The full-size, extended cab pickup was provided to the Foundation by Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., a premier supporter of the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day program.

Curtis, the 4-H and Youth Development Agent with Bowie County Extension, received the keys to the truck Oct. 22 in Indianapolis during the 2008 Progressive Agriculture Foundation annual dinner and reception. She was chosen amongst nearly 400 Safety Day coordinators from across the country.

With a busy schedule working with 4-H youth in Bowie County and the surrounding area, Curtis is especially excited to be the recipient of the truck.

"When I learned I'd been selected, I just couldn't believe it. I've been without a pickup for nearly a year and a half. In my work, I'm always hauling something, often something dirty, and it will be very nice to have a pickup to drive again," Curtis explained.

Bowie County 4-H Extension Agent Cherrie Curtis said four Bowie County 4-H clubs take part in preparing for and making the event successful.

"All of the clubs put the goody filled eggs together and either bake or purchase cookies," she said."The 4-H'ers come to the Easter Egg Hunt to help the (foster) kids hunt for eggs, and to play."

Curtis said each club fills five to six dozen plastic eggs for the event. She said eggs are filled with candy, toys, and sometimes a "golden" egg with a special toy or gift certificate inside.
    ...
Curtis said the event draws a lot of families with it's atmosphere and price (it's free).

"Not only is it a way for foster families to interact, it's a fun, free event for them," she said.
    ...
"The looks on the children's faces are priceless," said Curtis."This is one of the ‘happy' memories for some (foster children)."

In addition, Guffey and Curtis said the event provides unique prospective for children from both walks of life.
    ...
"They (4-H'ers) learn to give, they learn to appreciate their families and home life and to show compassion for other human beings," said Curtis.
    ...
Curtis said 4-H'ers have always been eager to help with the event and uphold the 4-H tradition of community service.

"Part of what 4-H is about is community - giving back to our communities," she explained.
