Stephanie Curry, operations director for Shoe-Shop.com, told the Inquirer: "Despite the doom and gloom on the high street and a summer which has killed sandal sales, our web sales are still growing at over 30 per cent year on year."

According to the news website, poor weather in the UK has been blamed for keeping people away from the high street and driving them online - online clothing sales alone increased by 22.8 per cent.

To my great surprise a letter advising me of my good fortune arrived in early September and some four weeks later my husband and I were off, accompanied by Debbie Paver, the face of Fly Flots on Ideal World and Steph Curry, the shoe-shop.com manager.

The following day, we bade farewell to Debbie and Steph as we chose to stay in the area for a few more days, during which we fully explored the delights of the Lake Garda area, primarily by use of the ferry boats which travel to all parts of the lake.
