    Maria is an architectural engineer from Mexico City with a Masters Degree in Restoration of Monuments from the University of Mexico and a PhD Candidate from Cornell University in Historic Preservation Planning.She has taught in the University of Mexico's School of Architecture and conducted research in the Environmental and Urban Studies Department in El Colegio de la Frontera Norte in Tijuana.Maria has also been chief of infrastructure in the Ministry of Fisheries, researcher in the Ministry of Urban Settlements, and Public Works, and technical analyst in the Ministry of Transportation in her home country.She became a grassroots activist after the 1985 Mexico-City earthquake and currently is a consultant for grassroots, public officials and businessmen in the California-Baja California region addressing historic preservation, environmental, and urban planning issues.Maria's interest in environmental education comes from her desire to help improve the relationship between the environment, cultural heritage, and society in the border region in order to stop pollution, social injustice and urban degradation.
